This role is focused on shaping and maintaining the core gameplay systems of a classic AAA real-time strategy title, with a strong emphasis on C++ development and system-level gameplay engineering. You will work on the systems that define moment-to-moment player experience, including unit behaviors, combat interactions, simulation logic, and mission scripting. The position requires close collaboration with designers, artists, QA, production, and fellow engineers to deliver polished and responsive gameplay features. You will also contribute to improving and modernizing a mature codebase while preserving the integrity and feel of an established RTS experience. The role combines hands-on feature development with technical problem-solving, debugging, and long-term system stability. It is a highly collaborative and impactful position within a creative and experienced game development environment.
Accountabilities:- Design, implement, and maintain core RTS gameplay systems in C++, including unit behaviors, movement, combat, targeting, abilities, and player interaction systems.
- Develop and support mission and scenario systems, including triggers, objectives, events, progression logic, and victory conditions.
- Build and enhance simulation systems with a focus on determinism, stability, scalability, and long-term maintainability.
- Collaborate with design, art, QA, production, and engineering teams to prototype features and refine gameplay feel.
- Debug and optimize performance across CPU, memory, synchronization, and gameplay edge cases in both single-player and multiplayer contexts.
- Maintain and improve a large legacy codebase by refactoring systems, reducing technical debt, and modernizing workflows where appropriate.
- Ensure gameplay systems remain stable, responsive, and consistent across updates and new feature development.
- Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and cross-functional problem-solving to improve overall engineering quality.
Requirements:
- 6+ years of professional software development experience in C++, preferably within the game industry.
- Experience shipping at least one commercial game or major update involving gameplay, AI, simulation, or engine systems.
- Strong ability to work within large, mature, or legacy codebases while improving maintainability and functionality.
- Experience building or debugging gameplay systems involving state, timing, AI, scripting, or mission logic.
- Solid understanding of real-time simulation constraints, performance optimization, and system architecture.
- Ability to independently own and deliver medium-to-large gameplay features from concept to completion.
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
- Comfortable providing technical feedback and participating in code reviews and design discussions.
- Preferred: experience in RTS, simulation-heavy, or systems-driven games.
- Preferred: familiarity with multiplayer synchronization, determinism, or networked simulation systems.
Benefits:
- Competitive compensation aligned with senior-level game engineering roles in Canada.
- Fully remote-friendly work environment with required overlap in Pacific Time.
- Opportunity to work on a beloved AAA real-time strategy franchise.
- High-impact role shaping core gameplay systems experienced by a large player base.
- Collaborative, creative studio environment with experienced game development teams.
- Opportunity to modernize and improve a long-standing, complex game codebase.
- Exposure to large-scale systems, simulation architecture, and advanced gameplay engineering challenges.
- Supportive environment focused on long-term career growth and technical mastery.
